Why do we search for Skills?

Why do we search for skills? 

Many of us may have certain abilities, which we remain unaware of, or which nobody has assisted us in discovering, such as the skills of delivering a lecture, business acumen, or possessing general knowledge.

One may discover these skills on his own, through a teacher’s or a work colleague’s help, or even through a sincere brother, however few they may be! However, these skills may remain buried inside the person until his personality becomes as stale as anyone else’s, and this is when we all lose out on another leader, lecturer or scholar, or perhaps a successful husband, or a caring father.

Here we will mention certain skills which we would like to remind you of if you already possess them, or which we would like to train you in if you don’t. So come along to find out Who we are and Why we are that!

A thought…

When you climb a mountain, look to the top and not to the rocks that surround you. Make sure of where you step as you climb, and do not leap in case you lose your footing.

Improve Yourself

You sit with someone who is twenty years old and notice that he has particular etiquette, logic and thought. You then sit with him when he is thirty to discover that he is exactly the way he was ten years ago and has not improved at all. Yet, you sit with others and you feel that they are actually taking benefit from their lives. You discover that they improve themselves on a daily basis. In fact, not an hour passes except that they improve either religiously or otherwise.
If you wish to ponder upon the different types of people with respect to self-improvement, then think about the following:
  1. There are those who like to watch those satellite television channels that help their general knowledge and intelligence grow.
  2. They benefit from other people’s experiences by watching constructive discussions, from which they learn the characteristics of debating and improve their language, understanding, and expertise in debate and persuasion.
  3. Then there are those who cannot miss out on a series about a failed love story, or an emotional play, or a horror film, or films about useless fantasies with no link to reality at all.

Just as how the stars are spread out in the sky, so are the stars of beauty spread out on earth. They will all perish. Refrain from your foolishness. If someone wants to see an international fool, he should look at the one who stares at temporary beauty. I am not saying this. Hadhrat Thanwi (Rahimahullah) says that every sinner is a fool but the sinner of the gaze is the leader of all the fools. He heads the fools because he will not achieve anything except burning the heart and making it uneasy. He is committing adultery of the eyes. If he spoke, then he has committed adultery of the tongue. He is speaking unnecessarily with her by saying, “Madam, where is your house? In which section of Gulshan Iqbal is it?” What is the need to speak like this to the lady. While you are committing haram, your carnal self is destroying you. Think of the fact that Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala is watching you. How can the one who meditates constantly that Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala is watching him, ever cast a haram glance? His sight kept a watch over my gaze. Regrettably, why were we unaware of this feeling? One should be aware all the time that Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala is watching my gaze. It should not be so that on the airport you completely neglect an old woman while you carry the bag of an attractive lady and even complete her immigration formalities. You tell her that you an expert at serving passengers. Is she the only passenger? There are other passengers as well. In whatever work you do, ponder that Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala is watching you. He knows the secret of the heart.

A saintly poet says:

The stealing of the eyes and the secrets of the bosom, You know, O Independent One. Remember that Allah Subhanahu wa Ta’ala is not in need of an x-ray.

Problems with no solutions

How many times have you noticed people driving their cars in a rage, often slapping the steering wheel and saying, “Oh! Its always buoy!” You may see a person walking in the street, no-one can bear to speak to him, he is so annoyed he keeps repeating, “Oh! It’s so hot!” If you were his colleague working in the same office, it would be a trial for you to have to see him every day. He always distracts you saying, “O man, the work is so much! Oh, when will they increase our salaries?” He arrives frowning and leaves resentful.
Sometimes, he complains of pains in his body or his son’s bad behavior. In short, we should all realize that there are problems in our lives with absolutely no solution, and that the only way to deal with them is by taking things easy. Yes, enjoy your life! Beware of allowing your difficult situation to impact on your behavior at work, with your children, your colleagues, etc. What have they done to deserve such punishment for problems which they played no part in, nor are able to provide solutions to? Do not let them associate grief and sadness with you each time they see or remember you.
This is why the Prophet forbade one from wailing over the dead, screaming, tearing up clothes, and shaving the head, etc. Why? Because the way to deal with the dead is by washing the body, covering it in a shroud, praying over it, then burying it in the grave and praying for the deceased. Screaming and wailing serves no purpose, except that it turns the joy of life into grief.

Once al-Ma’afi bin Sulayman was walking with his companion, and his companion turned to him, frowned and said, “How cold it is today!”
Al-Ma’afi said,“Have you warmed up now?’ “No”, he replied.
Al-Ma’afi said,“So what was the point of complaining? If you had glorified Allah, at least it would have been better for you.” And how accurate was his understanding and wisdom!

Do not expose problems you are unaware of, and do not
expound on small matters. Simply continue to enjoy your life.

The Effect of Monotheism on Human Life

The Qur’an and the Holy Prophet declared that this universe was neither without (peace be upon him) a Lord nor was it jointly controlled by a set of deites. It had One Lord and Master, the Creator and Controller wielding complete and absolute power over it. The Qur’an announced: Lo! His is the Creation and the Command, (Al-Araf: 54) meaning that God was the Sole Creator, the Sole Originator, or, the Sole Creative Principle and everything around man was dependent on Him by virtue of its creation by Him.

Yet to Him submitted whose is in the Heavens and the earth, willingly or unwillingly (Ali-Imran: 83), was a natural corollary of this declaration meaning that all things in nature, whether heavenly or earthly, bow down to His decrees and have perforce to submit to His Physical laws— so Exalted is he. So was it not incumbent on the creature possessing will and option to submit to Him willingly? Sincere and exclusive obeisance was due to God alone. He asks: Belongs not sincere religion to God? (Sad: 3)

The natural consequences following from this belief was that the world was united through a Common Principle; a Universal Law ran through it. Man was led to acknowledge a unity of purpose, motive and law in the varied phenomena of nature which could also help him find meaning and significance in his own life since it was integral to the wisdom underlying the integrated nature of this universe.

The Prophet of Islam acquainted man with the clear and easy creed to the Unity of God which was satisfying and full of vitality since it took away all irrational fear from him. This simple creed made him self-reliant, courageous, rational and undoubting by removing the fear of everything else save that of His real Master and Lord. It was because of this creed that man came to recognize his Creator as the Supreme Power, as the Enriches and the Destroyer. This discovery meant a world of change for him; he could now see the unity of cause in the manifolds of phenomena, was reassured of his pivotal position in the scheme of creation, became aware of his worth and dignity; in short, is acceptance of the serfdom of the One and only God made him the master of every other created being and object. As a vicegerent of God, he became aware of the exalted position allocated to him as the executor of the Will of God on earth. It was a concept previously unknown to the world.

Islam has strongly emphasized the concept of decency and modesty in the interaction between members of the opposite sex. Dress code is part of that overall teaching. There are two verses in the Qur’an in which Almighty Allah talks about the issue of decency and hijab as defined earlier.

The First Verse

In Chapter 24 known as an-Nūr (the Light), in verse 30, Allah commands Prophet Muhammad as follows:
قُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ يَغُضُّوْا مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِمْ وَ يَحْفَظُوْا فُرُوْجَهُمْ, ذَلِكَ أَزْكَى لَهُمْ.
“Say to the believing men that: they should cast down their glances and guard their private parts (by being chaste). This is better for them.”
This is a command to Muslim men that they should not lustfully look at women (other than their own wives); and in order to prevent any possibility of temptation, they are required to cast their glances downwards.This is known as “hijabof the eyes”.
Then in the next verse, Allah commands the Prophet to address the women:
قُلْ لِلْمُؤْمِنَاتِ يَغْضُضْنَ مِنْ أَبْصَارِهِنَّ وَ يَحْفَظْنَ فُرُوْجَهُنَّ…
“Say to the believing women that: they should cast down their glances and guard their private parts (by being chaste)…”
This is a similar command as given to the men in the previous verse regarding “hijab of the eyes”.
This hijab of eyes is similar to the teaching of Jesus where he says, “You have heard that it was said by them of old time, you shall not commit adultery. But I say unto you, That whosoever looks on a woman to lust after her has committed adultery with her already in his heart.”[2] So if you see a Muslim casting his/her eyes downwards when he/she is talking to a member of opposite sex, this should not be considered as rude or an indication of lack of confidence — he/she is just abiding by the Qur’anic as well as Biblical teaching.

After “hijab of the eyes” came the order describing the dress code for women:
وَ لاَ يُبْدِيْنَ زِيْنَتَهُنَّ إِلاَّ مَا ظَهَرَ مِنْهَا وَ لْيَضْرِبْنَ بِخُمُرِهِنَّ عَلىَ جُيُوْبِهِنَّ…
“…and not display their beauty except what is apparent, and they should place their khumur over their bosoms…”
There are two issues about this sentence.
(1) What is the meaning of “khumur” used in this verse?
Khumurخُمُرٌ is plural of khimarخِمَارٌ, the veil covering the head. See any Arabic dictionary like Lisanu ’l-‘Arab, Majma‘u ’l-Bahrayn or al-Munjid.
Al-Munjid, which is the most popular dictionary in the Arab world, defines al-khimar as “something with which a woman conceals her head—ما تغطى به المرأة رأسها .” Fakhru ’d-Din al-Turayhi in Majma‘u ’l-Bahrayn (which is a dictionary of Qur’anic and hadith terms) defines al-khimar as “scarf, and it is known as such because the head is covered with it.”[3]
So the word khimar, by definition, means a piece of cloth that covers the head.
(2) Then what does the clause “placing the khumur over the bosoms” mean?
According to the commentators of the Qur’an, the women of Medina in the pre-Islamic era used to put their khumur over the head with the two ends tucked behind and tied at the back of the neck, in the process exposing their ears and neck. By saying that, “place the khumur over the bosoms,” Almighty Allah ordered the women to let the two ends of their headgear extend onto their bosoms so that they conceal their ears, the neck, and the upper part of the bosom also.[4]
This is confirmed by the way the Muslim women of the Prophet’s era understood this commandment of Almighty Allah. The Sunni sources quote Ummu ’l-mu’minin ‘A’isha, the Prophet’s wife, as follows: “I have not seen women better than those of al-Ansar (the inhabitants of Medina): when this verse was revealed, all of them got hold of their aprons, tore them apart, and used them to cover their heads…”[5]
The meaning of khimar and the context in which the verse was revealed clearly talks about concealing the head and then using the loose ends of the scarf to conceal the neck and the bosom. It is absurd to believe that the Qur’an would use the wordkhimar (which, by definition, means a cloth that covers the head) only to conceal the bosom with the exclusion of the head! It would be like saying to put on your shirt only around the belly or the waist without covering the chest!
Finally the verse goes on to give the list of the mahram – male family members in whose presence the hijabis not required, such as the husband, the father, the father-in-law, the son(s), and others.
The Second Verse
In Chapter 33 known as al-Ahzab, verse 59, Allah gives the following command to Prophet Muhammad:
يَا أَيُّهَا النَّبِيُّ, قُلْ لأَزْوَاجِكَ وَ بَنَاتِكَ وَ نِسآءِ الْمُؤْمِنِيْنَ: يُدْنِيْنَ عَلَيْهِنَّ مِنْ جَلاَبِيْبِهِنَّ…
“O Prophet! Say to your wives, your daughters, and the women of the believers that: they should let down upon themselves their jalabib.”
What is the meaning of “jalabib”?
Jalabibجَلاَبِيْبٌis the plural of jilbabجِلْبَابٌ, which means a loose outer garment. See any Arabic dictionary like Lisanu ’l-‘Arab, Majma‘u ’l-Bahrayn or al-Munjid.
Al-Munjid, for instance, defines jilbab as “the shirt or a wide dress—القميص أو الثوب الواسع.” While al-Turayhi, in Majma‘u ’l-Bahrayn, defines it as “a wide dress, wider than the scarf and shorter than a robe, that a woman puts upon her head and lets it down on her bosom…”[6]
This means that the Islamic dress code for women does not only consist of a scarf that covers the head, the neck and the bosom; it also includes the overall dress that should be long and loose.
So, for instance, the combination of a tight, short sweater with tight-fitting jeans with a scarf over the head does not fulfill the requirements of the Islamic dress code.
